“Good” is the enemy of healthy.

Why having a good week doesn’t mean all is well…

You have an uneventful week and you show up to therapy thinking, “I have absolutely nothing to talk about. This was a great week! In fact, maybe I should even cancel my session because nothing is ‘wrong!”

I get it and I’ve been there. Sometimes it really seems like life is a breeze and you’re just coasting along. And that’s wonderful! What a blessing to not be burdened or stressed out. No one should have to feel constantly bogged down by emotions or always needing to sort through past baggage. There is definitely a time and place for cruising through life!

That said: human beings and our emotions are very complex. Sometimes when it FEELS as if we’ve had an uneventful week, there is actually a lot going on just under the surface. Or perhaps we are a little checked out and not fully processing things that should be processed.

A good therapist may help reveal a tendency to ‘bright-side,’ avoid conflict or ignore stressors that should not be ignored.

This is certainly not to say that you’re wrong every time you believe you have a ‘good’ week. But sometimes those ‘good’ weeks do provide opportune times to deal with content that you wouldn’t typically have the bandwidth to approach.

A lot of therapeutic content needs to be dealt with in the present. You had a fight with your spouse that needs to be processed, you have a new job opportunity to weigh or you are working through recurring anger issues. These things all will naturally come up if they were experienced over the course of the past week.

Having a ‘good’ week is often the best time to address bigger themes.

In other words: don’t cancel your session just because you think there’s nothing to talk about. I assure you: there is always something useful to glean if you’re willing!
